Alongside being a “haven for London’s dissatisfied youth”, providing the capital with frenzied DIY rock n roll parties across many a varied few dingy East London boozers – Sexbeat are also currently flourishing as a singles label; dishing out 7″ and cassette releases from the likes of Crocodiles, Jeremy Jay and Winter Drones like they’re going out of fashion.
The latest release comes courtesy of No Joy. Divided geographically between Montreal and LA, Laura Lloyd and Jasamine White-Gluz soak their music in a multi-coloured haze, constantly flirting between both shoe-gaze and balls out stoner rock. The single ‘No Summer’ eases you in gently with a doped out slacker vibe, not before breaking free into a caterwaul of noise and mayhem. Today’s Song Of The Day is the solely instrumental (aside from an anonymous vocal here and there) ‘No Joy’. Four and a half minutes of drop-D riffs that -in the wrong hands- could quite easily mutate into self-indulgent guff, however this particular beast not only manages to be completely bewitching but effortlessly cool to boot.
The single is limited to 300 copies on white vinyl and available to pick up via Rough Trade. Make sure you follow No Joy’s future escapades into aural frenzy by keeping tabs on their US label Mexican Summer.
