Having been pigeon-holed as nineties revivalists from the very second ‘Georgia’ swept us away in all its blustering glory back at the start of the year – not to mention winning over our softer side with a cassette only release that flirted with tender balladry a month or so back – a new Yuck song is always met with excitement and trepidation in equal measures. Are we going to be met with soaring melodies, blistered with fuzz toned guitar and spine-tingling hooks or will it be a stark, insular number – showcasing front-man Daniel Blumberg’s darker side… You can never second guess them, which is the exact reason I love them.
I was contemplating filling the remaining word count with fanboy-isms rather than trying to sum up why the following 7-odd minutes of ‘Rubber’ are destined to be the most vital 435 seconds you’ll witness all month. They’ve done another u-turn, fucking up our senses with a sprawling doped out jam that rises and falls, peaks and troughs in all the right places. Is this their attempt at an anthem? A call to arms? Christ only knows. All I can think about when listening to it is hitting play over and over again. I want to live in it. Feel its sweaty, beating heart pulsate against mine as we both comfort each-other in our serene narcotic state.
‘Rubber’ will be released on 12″ vinyl on November 1. It’s the first single to be lifted off their forthcoming debut album, due to land early 2011.
Oh, I’ve got four words left. Let’s see….
