Has there been a better example in 2010 of a band sounding like the city that spawned them than Selebrities? I’m guessing not. The pulse of Brooklyn beats throughout ‘Secret Garden’ like a neon lit, open all hours knocking shop. It’s sleazy, yet classy. Stand-offish yet endearing. Close your eyes and you can almost feel the late night humidity wash over you, as you roam the streets of Soho – up to your eyes in stiletto heels and fish-net stockings. After a minute or two, you start to lust after vocalist Maria Usbeck’s lo-rent Debra Harry-isms – ‘cos she’s the only one who understands what it is exactly that you’re feeling.
Ladies Man Effect EP is out now via Cascine. A new single by Selebrities will hit stores in November, followed by a full-length album this winter.
