SOTD #114 // Blackbird Blackbird: ‘Hawaii (NIVA Remix)’
To those of you who are loyal Song of the Day followers (and if you are, congratulations), the name Blackbird Blackbird should ring a few bells. Well, one bell exactly, given that he’s appeared before, taking The Concretes ‘Good Evening’ and souping it up to glorious effect back on SOTD #98. This time, however, the roles are reversed, with the Californian bedroom producer’s work being subject to a remixing of it’s own.
Taken from this year’s Summer Heat LP, the chilled out beats of Blackbird Blackbird’s ‘Hawaii’ have been taken and warped into something otherworldly and beautiful. The reworking is courtesy of NIVA, or Christian Niva to his friends, another young bedroom prodigy hailing from Stockholm. Having already been featured by the likes of Pitchfork himself, it’ll come as no surprise to hear that this is somewhat of a masterpiece, a track haunted by itself; delivered with eerie precision, bubbling with both ideas and energy.
Blackbird Blackbird’s album is out now. NIVA has an EP entitled Feverish Dreams coming soon, some tracks of which are available to stream on his bandcamp. You can pretty much guarantee that this will be far from the last time that either of them are featured as Song of the Day.
