SOTD #106 // Still Corners: 'Endless Summer'
In this game, if you snooze, you lose. Or rather if you find a band that you’re quite fond of then you better write about them quick, or else feel like a cheated when every other website has featured them. To that effect, you may have seen Still Corners elsewhere already this week, with Gorilla vs Bear, the Guardian and Neu Magazine already raving about their blissful shoegaze pop, whilst Song of the Day took time off from well earned respite to spend several hours kicking itself.
But when someone’s making music as eerily beautiful as this, it’s only a matter of time before the hype machine starts to click into gear. Featuring the kind of ghostly melodies that it was previously thought only Beach House could truly perfect, Still Corners layer icy vocals upon what sounds like a dusty old Wurlitzer. There are shades of C86 all over ‘Endless Summer’, but the end result is akin to talking a blustery walk around a deserted fairground – maudlin, bittersweet but utterly unforgettable.
As well as a string of London dates, the band have got a show in Berlin coming up following the release of their debut 7” on Great Pop Supplement records. A double A side featuring ‘Don’t fall in love’ and ‘Wish’, it builds up their 2008 self release ‘Remember Pepper?’. You’d be well advised to get your pre-orders in early, or run the risk of every other hipster in town beating you to the punch.
