SOTD #101 // Bodebrixen: 'I Was Sad & You Were Lonely (Dreamtrak Diamond Sound)'
It’s funny that this remix came straight out of a studio in Dalston, the grimy East London suburb that just so happens to be home to my favourite 24 hour bagel shop, because – on first listen – you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was a brand new cut from Gothenburg production duo Studio. Opening with a drum loop straight outta ‘Self Service’ – from Studio’s masterpiece West Coast, ‘I Was Sad & You Were Lonely’ is actually the latest from Danish duo Bodebrixen. Never a pair to shy away from their love of Swedish music, this is perhaps their finest moment to date. Taking the progressive beats of Studio and mixing in the naivety of The Embassy with the cock sure swagger of The Tough Alliance, it’s genuinely thrilling stuff.
So, whilst influenced heavily by the Service / Sincerely Yours stable, Dreamtrak’s Oli Horton uses his deft touch by scattering his trademark twee synth lines across the breezy rhythms which in turn creates moments of breathless euphoria. An explosion of colour and sound, much like Bodebrixen’s live show – this is one of the most essential tracks I’ve heard in a long while.
