SOTD #20 // Mojib: 'May Day Revisited'

I’m normally not being one for song mash-ups. They’re all a bit soulless and aimed towards faceless alcopop drinking indie kids with nothing better to do than download countless really *quirky* mixes of two unlikely songs in order to make something more interesting and Club NME friendly. There are lots of examples, but the one that springs to mind is that dreadful Bloc Party vs. Katy Perry thing from a couple of years ago *shivers*. </snob>

So no, I’m not normally one for mash-ups. But when this particular one landed in my inbox, intrigue eventually took over (though I’m probably biased as it features two of my favourite bands: The Duke Spirit and The Radio Dept). Mojib is a Swedish bedroom producer and for most of last year was working on a full length album project called ”UNKLE Revisited”. The LP was to feature UNKLE songs being remixed, or revisited as the title suggests, by Mojib featuring collobrations with other artists. But, due to label disbutes and sample clearance issues the project was unfortunately cancelled. Only one song survived the project, that being “May Day Revisited” – which uses a sample of The Radio Dept.’s “Messy Enough” (from 2009 single “David”) and the vocals of The Duke Spirit’s Leila Moss from the original UNKLE track. Mojib then sprinkles on a few well placed atmospheric backing vocals and keyboards to create something that many (or most) mash-ups fail to achieve – better the original.
