SOTD #45 // Gorillaz: 'Superfast Jellyfish (Mighty Mouse Remix)'
No question that ‘Superfast Jellyfish’ is one of the goofier tracks on Gorillaz Plastic Beach, providing a fictional soundtrack to a commercial for the most sugary cereal known to man. Despite the best efforts of Gruff Rhys and De La Soul, the song came off as an intentional comical interlude before the album got a bit more serious. However, on the dynamic Mighty Mouse remix of the track, exclusive to The Line Of Best Fit, the beats are turned up and the jocular aspects of the track are celebrated and enhanced on this disco-laden mix.
The preposterous De La rhymes are still present, but somehow they fit better with this amped-up, spirited mix, creating a sonic collage that sounds even more like a catchy jingle than the original. Mighty Mouse maintains the carefree nature and pulse of the album version, while expanding the sonic palette of the song, coloring it with broad strokes of rhythm and a playful attitude that is bound to fill some dance floors with kids who don’t care if it’s time for breakfast or not.
Superfast Jellyfish is taken from the album Plastic Beach which is out now. More info at www.gorillaz.com.
