Song Of The Day #213 // About Group – You're No Good
‘You’re No Good’, today’s Song of the Day, is the first single to be taken from About Group’s forthcoming second album, Start and Complete, due out on Domino on the 18 April. Featuring members of Hot Chip, This Heat and Spiritualized, the group once again employed the improvisational techniques used for their first release in order to construct a free flowing, and openly instinctive follow-up.
This song has a great story behind it. Having originally been recorded by Harvey Averne, the track was deconstructed, then remade in 1967 by avant-garde composer Terry Riley, the product of his efforts being widely recognised as one of the earliest examples of remixing. This time around, it’s the immensly talented About Group at the helm, and the result is an engaging, thoroughly modern take on a classic song.
Their new version has respectfully maintained a late 60s psychedelic feel, which is inevitably roused whenever an organ is allowed the license to run wild within a loosely structured piece. It’s an organ littered, bass heavy affair and as ever with this (about) group, there’s a sense of immediacy and spontaneity, and at the same time, a great confidence. Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor places his clean cut, delicate vocals over the top of an instinctive, marvellously elongated, improvised jam which boldly underlines the technical mastery to be found within this collective. If this is the quality we’re to expect from the rest of the album, then 18 April won’t be able to come fast enough.
