Song Of The Day #191 // Rainbow Arabia: 'Without You'
You sort of know what to expect from legendary German electronic label Kompakt these days. The label founded by deep techno legend Wolfgang Voight in 1998 has been especially prolific of late with awe-inspiring releases from the likes of The Field and Matias Aguayo. Never resting on their laurels, they’ve always been found as a joyous entity difficult to pigeonhole with one genre, such is the brilliantly diverse level of sonic intricacy that they push. And with the emergence of new signings Rainbow Arabia, they seem to have pulled the wool over our eyes once more.
Sitting somewhere between the luscious histrionics of Lykke Li, the surreal percussions of Gang Gang Dance and the dreaminess of jj, the married, California based duo of Danny and Tiffany Preston have produced an album of sultry, international shriek anthems that are sure to see them branch out to pastures far afield from their homeland. It becomes pretty clear why they cite Omar Souleyman as one of their biggest influences when you hear the album as a whole on their Bandcamp page, although the tropical pop of ‘Without You’ takes a lighter shift in their wholesome world amalgam – its Friendly Fires pound of drums and delicate sparks of synth melodies are all out pop perfection, if anything.
Twin that with a reverberated, stadium 4/4 beat and ‘Without You’ becomes an amazing example of a post-modern party anthem. More please.
