In the sea of over-hyped and over-marketed female solo artists currently dominating the British pop charts (see; Florence, Marina, Pixie et al) it’s always a refreshing change to be greeted with a record from a female solo artist that free of any shameless production tweaks or needless marketing ploys, and to see the music for what it truly is: Simple, honest and most important of all – unique.
Cate Le Bon is of course not the only ‘quirky’ female folk artist to emerge of late. Alessi’s Ark and Paperplain both have much deserved merit, but at such a young age, their (lack of) life experience can often leave the listener wanted something more to get their teeth around. Le Bon writes from a world weary angle, her simple songs flecked with cosmic dust and a vocal delivery that’s draped in a gorgeous Welsh lilt, allowing her wyrd wisdom to pour out from the speakers like an ice cold glass of milk.
‘Disappear’, today’s Song Of The Day is from her 2007 debut 7″ ‘No One Can Drag Me Down’ and thus previously unavailable in a digital format. Although a staple in Cate’s live shows, it’s rather a treat to reacquaint ourselves with a song that would otherwise be lost amongst a select few owners of the original 7″ vinyl.
Cate Le Bon’s debut album Me Oh My was released last year via Gruff Rhys’ Irony Bored label. Catch her on tour throughout March before she heads to SXSW for a handful of showcases. Full details over on MySpace.
