SOTD #14 // Ana Silvera: 'Rosanna' (Toto Cover)
So, something a little different for our Song Of The Day today… A cover of a classic 80′s tune, Toto’s ‘Rosanna’, by the wonderful singer-songwriter Ana Silvera.
Like all good cover versions, Ana’s makes you reappraise a song that you thought you knew. Toto’s original was an epic power anthem of crazed riffs and big hair. However, the gentle guitar, violin and piano are carefully played, the hurt and pain in Ana’s voice turns this once 80′s dance-floor center piece into a very different, tearful, lost love song.
I actually can’t get over how different these two versions are… Toto’s probably summed up all that was bad about mainstream pop music back when it was released. But Ana has revealed a much more subtle side to the song. A song that is actually about loss and desperation, not some kind of twisted celebration for losing a girl that you quite liked… As with most of these things, it’s all in the delivery…
