SOTD #10 // Retribution Gospel Choir: 'Hide It Away'
Retribution Gospel Choir return with the new album, 2, on the 22nd February. ‘Hide It Away’ is the opening track and sets the scene for an exhilarating pulse of indie-rock that’s not been heard for some time.
It’s that age-old combination of quiet intro and shrilling chorus, the guitars cracking away at the very gates of hell, the drums sounding like the very end of the earth. Alan Sparhawk’ voice (best known for his more downtempo work with Low) aches with emotion as the music rolls over it. And then it’s over. A concise, perfect, slice of rock. And did I mention the drums? Man, those drums seem to come from another world…
I still can’t get over the difference between Sparhawk and Steve Garrington’s work with Low and this, their Gospel Choir side-project that seems to allow them a chance to rock out, to descend into walls of feedback and kick off the laid back shuffles of their day job. Fantastic.
