Sleepovers' debut track "I Am Me and You Are You" is slacker rock perfection
A dreamy blend of lo-fi, distorted guitars and refreshingly candid lyrics - up-and-coming London outfit Sleepovers have crafted a single so catchy you won't believe it's the first song they've ever released.
Channeling the punky charisma of Only Real, the airtight songwriting of Peace, and the left-field slacker charm of Mac DeMarco, Sleepovers are certainly entering the new year with a bang.
Their debut single manages to be both a bittersweet tale of resignation over a failed relationship and a breezy, buzzy listen that you'll surely want to revisit when summer rolls around.
The band isn't reinventing the wheel stylistically, but "I Am Me and You Are You" brims with an energy that is hard to capture, and there's clear chemistry between Sleeopvers' members. Nowadays, it's easy for new artists to overthink their music, and there's a refreshing rawness and straightforward sensibility that is on display here.
"'Cause I am me and you are you/ there's no more I could do / I never had no cruel intentions," sighs singer Alfie Smith on the track's magnetic chorus.
Sleepovers play London venues The Waiting Room on 21 January and The Lexington on 29 January. You'll want to catch them now before they're the word on everyone's lips.
