Sjowgren announce themselves with an indie gem in the shape of “seventeen”
The indie revival is in full-swing and just in time for summer. Our demand for organic, pop-tinged music with a DIY-feel is peaking and Sjowgren appear to be joining the party at the climax of the evening.
Stumbling-upon this enigmatic Bay Area outfit was an extremely happy accident and “seventeen” immediately lodged between the ears. From its fuzzing opening piano chords, the track builds into a rip-roaring indie smash thanks to its hand-clapping rhythm, driving bass line and gorgeous layers of vocals.
“Don’t worry, I’m not in hurry / not going nowhere, I’m not going nowhere” the chorus beautifully reassures the listener, following-on from some sumptuous “oohs” and that fist-clenching, smile-inducing crescendo.
As their first single proper (three wonderful demos are available here) eyes will be kept firmly on the development of these newcomers. Here’s hoping Sjowgren really aren’t going anywhere.
