Exciting electronic duo San Scout preview debut EP with the restless "Get Me By"
University friends Freddie Clough and Jonny Woodley aka San Scout have been quietly working on their debut short-player EP1 for the past few months. Infectious slow-jam "Render" piqued our interest back in February, and now the London/Surrey-based duo are ready to share the full fruits of their labour with tomorrow's EP release.
New track "Get Me By" provides a pleasing snapshot of what to expect. Much like "Render", the song plays a fascinating game of contrasts: at once dense and spacious, soulful and hollow.
Opening with emotive vocal hums and fidgety, reverb-kissed guitars, Clough is heard detailing his struggles with communication. "I always seem to buckle with words when I'm face to face/it's easier to silence my thoughts instead," he sings, the track's early vacuity mirroring the quiet.
Just as the listener is lulled in, the pair throw a curveball of weighty bass and off-kilter electronic beats, replete with thick vocal samples and ghostly atmospherics.
Ben Khan is the obvious comparison with its satisfying slew of soul and intelligent electronic arrangements, but San Scout - for better or worse - seem to be in the habit of presenting more opposing textures.
"Get Me By" is another peek into the somewhat intriguing world of San Scout. We'll certainly keep an eye out.
EP1 is released tomorrow, Tuesday 19 April.
