You know what the best bit of SBTRKT’s (fantastically disappointing) record is? Sampha‘s voice. Cracked, unbuffed, it has the impression of something entirely natural; something roughly hewn.
‘Indecision’ showcases that voice to fantastic new effect. This is clearly a demo, and yet it is almost completely fully formed. The unashamedly bombastic, New-York-heartbreak chords; the delicate backing; the reed-thin layers of synth – and then a chorus so huge, so instantly familiar, that it seems impossible to imagine this not filling venues in the coming months.
Yes, there is an unnecessary candles-in-the-air middle eight. But we can forgive him that.
Someone tell Sampha to hurry up on that solo LP, yes?
