Rudi Zygadlo‘s Great Western Laymen is a criminally underrated record. Its strange amalgamation of thudding kick-and-bass, spring-like synths and creepy as hell nursery rhyme lyrics is as odd as it is compulsive; as engrossing as it is difficult to categorise.
Making a brief detour onto Pictures from his regular home at Planet Mu, Zygadlo is set to release a one-off EP, Achtung, next month. ‘Variously Made Men’, the first track to materialise from the record, is more vocal-heavy than his previous output, coming across less like a dubsteppy singer-songwriter and more like a Tim Burton-esque electronic Tiger Lillies – or a 21st century Looney Tunes soundtrack. It’s fantastically strange, witty, and inventive.
Achtung is out on 14 September on 12″ and download. In the meantime, stream ‘Variously Made Men’ below.
