I knew this would be great before I even pressed play. Rudi Zygadlo seldom puts a foot wrong, his odd combination of dub-ish production and classic songwriting pitching him consistently to the left of most other electronic artists – out in a bizarre hinterland of nursery rhyme lyrics and scatty percussion.
‘The Deaf School’ is taken from his forthcoming EP Achtung!, his first on Pictures. We featured ‘Variously Made Men’ from the same record a couple of weeks ago, but this is definitely the stronger track. It sees Zygadlo further embrace vocals, inching ever closer towards more conventional song structures – but still maintaining the thudding, house and dubstep-inflected rhythm section that characterised the fantastic Great Western Laymen.
Achtung! is out 14 September. In the meantime, stream ‘The Deaf School’ below.
