Royel Otis bask in a sunny yet lovesick groove on "Without U"
Lifting spirits with their brightly hued melodies and chirpy vocal harmonies, Royel Otis, the brainchild of Australia’s Otis Pavlovic and Royel Maddell, share their sophomore single “Without U”.
Whilst they can’t be pinned to any one genre, the duo – friends born on the coastline of Bondi Beach – have an undeniable, sunlit sheen to their sound. Releasing their debut single “Only One” earlier this year, they’ve crafted an indie-leaning palette and youthful exuberance that is fit for your favourite coming-of-age dramas.
Now, they follow with a new slice of chill, “Without U”. Loosely tropical in its unctuous beat and gentle plucking guitars, the single is an ode to lovesick feelings. Catchy and laidback, it takes the indie tropes of the likes of MGMT and infuses them with an ‘80s surf rock aura.
The zest of “Without U” is perfectly reflected in the accompanying video – a riot of fish costumes, vast landscapes, and b-roll VHS footage.
Speaking on the track, Royel Otis share “’Without U’ is the yearning for that spesh person whilst cruising down the coast in the back of a convertible, grilling some grub on a George Foreman grill and cooling some cold ones. The winds in your hair and the suns going down on the horizon but what’s the point in having fun without a loved one?”
With a smorgasbord of influences, namely including The Strokes and Daft Punk as well as Royel’s time spent in New York and Japanese city-pop, Royel continues “We want to create a sound that holds the same raw, honest, evocative feeling that inspired us to pick up our instruments in the first place.”
