Listen: Royce Wood Junior - "The Basin"
From the second "The Basin" kicks off with that funky bassline and the somewhat eeire hum in the background, as though a bunch of ghosts wanted to kick back at the hippest jazz club in town for the night, it's obvious Royce Wood Junior has something special on his hands.
Whereas previous track "January Time" opted more for the darkly soulful tinge often seen in tracks by SOHN or James Blake, here Junior has taken influence from his good pal Jamie Woon and gone for a more chilled out, late night vibe; the sort of track that keeps you wanting to dance until the birds start tweeting.
It's a haphazard affair, with harsh beats skittering around as Junior's dreamy falsetto glides through the track. Top all that off with the aforementioned groovy bassline and a little bit of added wobble, and "The Basin" is the perfect song to stumble home to after a night out.
Where Ghostpoet or even Jamie Woon could be the soundtrack to a drunken night full of heartache, "The Basin" is the complete antithesis. The funky rhythm and woozy light night vibe feel perfect for the early morning wander home; grin plastered on your face, feet aching and plenty of great stories for the morning after.
Royce's Rover EP, from which "The Basin" is taken, is out now via 37 Adventures, with his debut album The Ashen Tang out next year.
