Rose Gray transforms her lockdown malaise into the brooding euphoria of "Same Cloud'
An ode to London in lockdown singer/songwriter Rose Gray hopes she's not alone in her feelings of despair as the muted skies of isolation seem neverending.
Last year the East London-based singer/songwriter impressed us with her stunning debut single "good life" her smokey vocals paired with her sharp observations really struck a chord. Growing up inspired by the chart-dominating voices of Christina Aguilera, Gray now finds a lot to love in the world of '90s dance music naming Primal Scream and Saint Etienne as core to her developing sound.
Like the rest of us, Gray was thrown into a new unknown world back in March. Spending her time rediscovering old favourites she was listening to a lot of Moby and All Saints while she was working on "Same Cloud". Produced by Rob Milton (Arlo Parks, Holly Humberstone), her new single nods to this nostalgia while drawing on the power of Gray's soulful tone and her intimate analysis of life.
“The world had slowed down, it still feels slow," Gray explains. "I spent a lot of days wondering how someone was feeling and if they were under the ‘same cloud’ as me." Painting a picture of whiling away her days pondering this predicament, Gray's portrait of life under the dull and mundane hold of isolation is very familiar.
The influence of '90s dance music is clear and adds an uplifting sentiment to "Same Cloud". Despite its lyrical melancholy Gray manages to make something hopeful despite her original message born out of sadness. This new release not only marks Gray's return following a brief break to get a hold on her sound, but it's a real turning point for this exciting young musician narrating life in London, navigating love, loss and everything in-between.
