Guitars were mercifully thin on the ground at this year’s Sonar – as one might expect from Europe’s foremost electronic music festival. But the blighted instrument did make a couple of brief appearances, by far the most enjoyable of which was from London artist Raisa K.
Raisa is perhaps most recognisable as the keyboard player from Micachu & The Shapes - and there are some similarities between the two projects. The crunchy toy keyboard sounds and sing-songy melodies are reminiscent of the trio’s most deconstructed work, but into that mix is thrown a lilting sense of stop-start rhythmic experimentation and, most prominently, a vocal style that pitches playground delivery against uncannily threatening lyrics.
