Throwing Snow really is a remarkably fitting name. The producer (who normally goes by the rather more prosaic ‘Ross’) has been releasing a steady stream of bitterly wintry tracks and remixes over the past year or so, most notably on Alex Nut’s Ho Tep imprint. Cheerful they are not. Beautiful, however, they most definitely are.
His latest release, the Wallow EP, may well be Throwing Snow’s strongest effort yet. Simultaneously delicate and bass-driven, these beautifully produced tracks bring to mind the similarly dour Becoming Real – but with an added arsenal of hook-laden melodies. A brace of top quality remixes (including a particularly special Lapalux rework of ‘Wallow’) pushes the record into the ‘essential’ category.
The EP is out 1 August on Raffertie’s Super Recordings. In the meantime, you can stream the title track below.
