Poster Paints lend ragged indie-pop colour to debut single “Number 1”

Newly minted Glaswegian outfit Poster Paints champion a rich Scottish indie-pop tradition via the feel-good pull of debut track “Number 1”.

Introduced to each other through The Vaselines’ lead Eugene Kelly, Frightened Rabbit member Simon Liddell and Glaswegian artist Carla J Easton combine to uphold the undimmed spirit of college rock, drawing on contributions from CHVRCHES’ Jonny Scott and Suse Bear of Tuff Love to live-wire effect.

Reverb-splattered, riotous guitar melodies and supercharged vocals abound with jangle-pop primacy on “Number 1” - the pair mining a daydream seam of infectious songwriting in distortive, unfettered fashion akin to that of Teenage Fanclub and The Primitives.

Volleying between remote recording sessions, the duo transcended obstacles posed by the current state of play to engineer a shock of combustible energy. “It’s not the perfect way to work - it’ll never replace the chemistry of writing and playing in a room together," Liddell comments, "but when isolation is a necessity, we’re lucky to be living in a time that we have the technology to collaborate in this way.”

Easton pinpoints the compelling appeal of the two-piece’s initial offering, while namechecking a series of acts as inspiration: “It’s just so immediate. Summer pop scuzz. Jesus and Mary Chain meets Moe Tucker by way of The Supremes."

"Number 1" is out now via Olive Grove Records. Find Poster Paints on Instagram.
