Listen: Pity Sex - "Acid Reflex"
“Ann Arbor is a whore”. Oh how the name of that town up North housing that insufferable maize and blue slathered university lends itself to innumerable sophomoric, misogynistic insults. You may not know what I’m on about but, having been born and raised in Ohio, the Ohio-Michigan rivalry runs spleen deep.
Lo, leave it to the incomparably named noise rockers Pity Sex to redeem, at least to a degree, that sad sack town for yours truly. The Ann Arbor quartet traded in abrasive, murky late ‘80s fuzz interlaced with blissful ebbs a la Dinosaur Jr. on their 2012 debut EP Dark World. The band’s latest single, “Acid Reflex”, is one half of their half of a split 7” with like-minded Pittsburgh quintet, Adventures.
On this gem, Pity Sex play a shade poppier, Brendan Greaves’ and Britty Drake’s interchanges gleefully reminiscent of The Lemonheads’ Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield. Trading off moans and coos clamoring for a mixed bag of virtues and vices to quell their stomach-churning insecurity, the duo’s vocals are crocheted seamlessly into the succulent fuzz-pop.
