Last night’s Ja Ja Ja was one of the best yet. The monthly Scandinavian night, co-run by some of the people who also look after The Line Of Best Fit, is always a fun way to investigate some new music – and a good reminder of the importance Scandinavian governments are placing on the export of their bands.
But last night was particularly good for one reason: Philco Fiction. The Norwegian three-piece already have an album out, and have played pretty extensively in Scandinavia, but this was one of their first UK excursions. Their deconstructed disco is bookended by icy synths on one side, and bombastic, pop-hit vocal harmonies on the other. ‘Portrait Of Silence’ is their set-closer; a eulogic track that brings to mind Soap & Skin. Stream that below – but also make sure that you listen to the spectacular ‘Help’, released last year, but surely dying for a re-release.
