Pelicandy's new track "Animals" is contagious synthpop brilliance
London-based quartet Pelicandy have unveiled "Animals", another devilish mesh of styles and sounds.
The new video stars dancer Roney Lewis and was shot in Toronto by fashion director Renée Rodenkirchen.
"The video for ‘Animals’ happened really organically through friends," explains Rodenkirchen. "We went into conceptualizing for the video knowing we wanted a dancer to be the main focus. The Pelicandy guys knew a girl from Toronto and she suggested Roney who happens to live in the city; immediately we knew he was perfect. He kind of has this effortless cool factor to him - like he doesn't really give a shit, but at the same time is super talented and polished as a dancer. Also... his lips!"
"I usually shoot super bright and glossy, so I wanted to try something totally different that was kind of dark and moodier," the director continues. "Chinatown at night was perfect - it's full of these super rich red and yellow lights and the ambient light is this cool green/blue. The best moment was walking through these busy streets with Roney dancing past people and them just looking at him so confused or pulling out their phones and filming him. One shopkeeper even joined in at one point which was super fun."
"Animals" is a bewitching fusion of glammy stabs, webs of psychedelia, huge pop motifs, and funky licks - it's a bit '80s, a bit Metronomy, and a bit Jungle, but it doesn't linger long in any one spot, allowing the band to continue forging their own path. The four firm friends - they've been pals since school - weave together their disparate experiences into one glorious sonic tapestry here, offering a track that's dangerously infectious and ruthless in its use of rhythm; just try and keep still with those beats and that bassline. You can't. It's impossible.
