Paul Thomas Saunders' new single is the antidote to sickly, fickle love songs
Atmospheric pop auteur Paul Thomas Saunders has lifted the veil on "I'll Come Running", his latest majestic offering.
"I'll Come Running" is a stark, seismic song with weighty sentiments that rupture the fibres in your body. Mercury-like pads and drones swirl behind clattering prongs of percussion and Saunders' own creaking vocal line - if he were to collapse partway through it wouldn't seem odd. He doesn't, though, ploughing onwards and mustering the strength to finish a song that's as romantic as it is devastating.
"'I'll Come Running' is the first real love song I've written," explains Saunders. "I grew up hating most love songs, they were fickle and false, strung together by tired clichés. They were saccharine, everything that love isn't. For me love is a desperate, it's actual magic in a fucking brutal world. Insanity inducing, soul crushing, utterly empowering but at the same time completely debilitating. Anything but saccharine. So this track is a love song that rings true to me. It's vulnerable, afraid, and fuelled by the greatest gift bestowed on songwriters - the insecurity of men."
Saunders is set to embark on a UK tour from next month with Norwegian singer/songwriter Siv Jaksobsen, Bristol artist Fenne Lily, and affecting balladeer Sivu. Find out full details and ticket info.
