Many great labels have a distinct aesthetic. When you buy something from Anticon, or Mute or, further back, Stax or Motown, you have a pretty good idea of what you might be getting before you even press play.
London’s Double Denim are beginning to forge their own identity, apparently harking back to a time when you could buy records blind simply because you knew you loved the label. Theirs is an unremittingly dark musical persona, as evidenced on Christian Aids ‘Stay +’, and it is a persona that seems a perfect fit for Outfit.
‘Two Islands’, the Liverpool band’s latest single, trades in the sorts of breaking-wave guitars, feedback, and hooky vocals that one imagines Daniel Miller is a complete sucker for. It is a fantastically catchy pop song, interestingly arranged – and the vocals remind us of Simple Minds which, whatever anyone else tries to tell you, is a very good thing indeed.
‘Two Islands’ is out in September on 7″.
