In all the excitement about DIY recording, it seems that a lot of bands have forgotten about actually making their records sound good. Oh Minnows have no such problem; their dense, analogue synth-led tracks sound utterly beautiful – thick, bassy, glowing.
Oh Minnows is the long-gestated solo project from ex-Semifinalists man Chris Steele-Nelson. ‘You’ll Never Know Us’ is the first track to appear from his debut album For Shadows, and it is instantly, impossibly addictive. Rather like Slowdive playing Simple Minds covers, or Hall & Oates recast as 21st century, melancholic arena-fillers, this is ambitious, beautifully produced, and heartbreakingly sad.
For Shadows is out later this year on Young & Lost. In the meantime, download ‘You’ll Never Know Us’ below.
