Australian-duo nyck sign with Mushroom subsidiary and share "Speak My Mind"
Melbourne duo nyck (pronounced n.y.c.k) release stirring new single "Speak My Mind", their first on 100s+1000s; the new subsisidurary of the Australian-based Mushroom Group.
Last year, Nick Acquroff and Dom Garrard released their debut single "Decision", a heartbreaking ballad centred around the titular decision of ending a relationship. Quickly featured by triple j Unearthed (the Australian equivalent of BBC Introducing), the pair sold out their single launch show, played a string of shows on the East coast, and are now set to head out on a national tour of Australia with Amy Shark.
"Speak My Mind" is in essence the pre-cursor to their debut. Another soul-stirring track capitalising on Acquroff and Garrard's beautiful harmonies, it explores the time before "Decision" where long term love begins to sputter. If "Decision" marks the breaking point of a relationship, "Speak My Mind" is the point where everything changes.
Going for a bare bones approach with the instrumentation, nyck's sound focuses on the fundamentals; the fundamentals being the vocals, the melody and lyrics telling a story. That's not to say production value is lost or forgetten, but through the harmonies, piano and soft guitars they manage to create a devastatingly haunting and soulful track which sounds impressively loud despite its sparse arrangement.
