Berlin artist Novaa shares futuristic alt-pop gem “Drones”
“Drones” is an intricately produced alt/electronica pop effort from Novaa that enthralls the senses and awakens the mind.
Berlin experimental pop artist/producer Antonia Rug, better known as Novaa, creates music sequestered in a gorgeously lush and ethereal soundscape. Her newest single “Drones”, from her forthcoming album The Futurist, follows her sci-fi-influenced single “AI Am In Love,” which will also be on the LP.
Underneath the expansive instrumentation is a profound sense of yearning on “Drones”. Through the organic experimentation of delicate guitars, subtle piano and otherworldly electronics, Novaa delivers a scintillating effort of sonic euphoria. The track is riveted with understated sonic inflections as Novaa explores synthetic productions that are hushed slightly below her captivating vocals.
Novaa’s lyricism is guided by a fractured relationship and the paranoia of what love can do to someone in the process. The richness behind her words and vocals adds a wealth of emotions to a track fixated on the future – the future you imagined once before and the one that's the current reality.
“When I wrote ‘Drones’ I was in the middle of having a panic attack,” explains Novaa. “I was stressed, felt wired, smothered and tired. There already was a song that I wrote about drones, but I felt like it was missing emotion and in that moment the chorus lines of the new drone song came to me out of nowhere and very naturally. I wrote and produced this song in roughly a day.
“Even though it’s about drones, it also talks about anxiety and feeling pressured. As with all of these songs, I want to talk about these ‘futuristic’ topics without judging them, so people discuss and talk about them and judge them themselves. Drones already are part of our everyday lives, and they will be even more important and present in ‘the future’”.
In April 2019, she released her self-titled debut LP via Novalty. Novva’s sophomore record The Futurist is slated for an early 2020 release and explores the future in various forms and concepts.
