Lose yourself in the blissfulness of Native Eloquence's "Habits" [Premiere]

03 June 2015, 09:45 | Written by Rory Foster

Native Eloquence is just one man: the Oakland-based Adam Hirsch. It's worth remarking because his music - a sound that eludes definition - contains everything from saxophone and double bass, to echoing ambiance, dreamy vocals and otherworldly beats. It sounds like the work of more than one person. But it’s not. It’s just Adam Hirsch.

“Habits” is the second song to be released off Big Blue Nowhere, Hirsch’s upcoming album for little Brooklyn indie label Stereocure, a label he also helped to found. The previous track, “Doldrum”, lies somewhere between the worlds of Polar Bear and Grizzly Bear, creating a seductive jazz-tinted indie.

Speaking about the track, Hirsch said: '"Habits' is about habits: moving carefully from place to place, sound to sound, things we could keep doing but don't have the time or means. This recording wouldn't have been possible without contributions from Stephen Becker, Sally Decker and Nathan Swedlow. The song confuses me and puts me in a very hazy personal space, which makes me glad to have other people adding such great sounds and support to that world."

This second track, which you can listen to below, drifts a little closer to the latter bear with soft guitar echoing around an eclectic sonic blend. Fans of Adult Jazz might also enjoy the length at which Hirsch manages to hold the organic architecture of the track together, clocking in at a cool 6 minutes 23 seconds. But whilst the UK band’s tracks are a little more intense, Hirsch’s are a gentler journey.

Big Blue Nowhere is released on 25 August (pre-order here).
