My Sad Captains – The Homefront Pt. II // Song Of The Day #259
Thrilled to be able to welcome the return from one of London’s best kept secrets: My Sad Captains. Signed to Stolen Recordings (Pete and the Pirates, Bo Ningen, JEFF the Brotherhood), MSC released their criminally overlooked debut album Here & Elsewhere back in 2009. The quartet made their live return last week at The Line Of Best Fit’s club night in central London to debut songs from their forthcoming new album which was recorded in an isolated barn in deepest darkest Cornwall before being sent over the atlantic ocean to Larry Crane for mixing duties (past credits include Elliot Smith, Stephen Malkmus and Quasi).
The first taster made available for public consumption is the remarkable, understated gem ‘The Homefront Pt. II’ – four and a half minutes of kraut infused rhythms that gradually build with subtle electronic swathes and motorik bass grooves. A bolder beast than past material that sees a fresh confidence and approach envelope. Like the first rays of the morning sun, there is a warmth here that counteracts the inherant darkness of the puslating rhythm section. Wilco’s ‘Spiders (Kidsmoke)’ a genuine touchstone – less the ear-splitting Tom Verlaine-esque guitar wig out. Maybe they’ve saved that for the album. Genuinely thrilled to have these guys back.
