For what is essentially a debut bedroom recording project, Evil Ex‘s Bygones EP is remarkably fully formed. The tracks are at once delicate and furious; one moment meticulously picked guitar, the next cascades of Sturm und Drang drumming.
But then Evil Ex isn’t really a debut bedroom record – at least not in the most obvious sense. Instead, it is the brand new solo project from Three Trapped Tigers man Matt Calvert.
Certainly, some of the TTT hallmarks are here; the obscene time signatures, the huge riffs. But this EP has its own, very distinctive characteristics – perhaps the most important of which is the strange, irrepressible groove that runs throughout. There is certainly no shortage of new ideas here, and there is also no shortage of noise (helped in great part by the drumming, which comes courtesy of TTT’s Adam Betts) – but the whole record feels eminently danceable. Even if you would look a bit strange doing it.
‘D’Lin’ is the opening track from the Bygones EP, and it is today’s Song Of The Day courtesy of Blood and Biscuits. You can pre-order the (very limited edition) EP here.
