Radio One schemer George Ergatoudis recently declared that the “appetite for guitar bands is slowly starting to return” - indicating that six strings could feature more heavily on the station’s daytime playlists in the near future. Okay, it’s a distinctly vague – and all-too-familiar – call, but one that will come as music to the ears of new London group Movie all the same.
The faceless collective uploaded their first track “Mr. Fist” this week: an impossibly debonair account of a civilized outing turned alcohol-fuelled farce, gaily chiming “got a ride on the booze cruise/when all you thought you deserved was a rose”. There’s a quintessentially British flounce to the delivery, one that’s not a world away from Morrissey in his despairing, droll pomp; and yet, the strutting funk guitars are so damn show-stoppingly demanding they could have been pilfered right out of Bowie’s jumpsuit pockets.
Movie are packing some seriously ravenous hooks. You bring the popcorn.
