Swedish duo Morabeza Tobacco share magnetic lo-fi melancholic single “Ally McBeal”
“Ally McBeal”, which bears no relation to the TV show besides in name, is lifted from Morabeza Tobacco's debut studio album due out later this year. It washes up on the sonic coasts of forlorn arrangements and idealistic storytelling.
Swedish indie duo Morabeza Tobacco returns with “Ally McBeal,” their third single to date and first of 2019. The lo-fi production complemented by otherworldly synths has “Ally McBeal” feeling like a summer daze as listeners wander through the realm of a hazy open field to see what’s on the other side.
The new single follows 2018 tracks “Defenders of the Glam” and “TTYL”. Whereas the previous releases trek along through psychedelic-pop territories with twirling basslines and chilled-out synths, “Ally McBeal” features something more celestial in its sonic cadences.
At its core, “Ally McBeal” is a dream-pop endeavor ruminating with mystical arrangements and haunting harmonies from Vanilla Stillefors & Gustav Jennefors. The Stockholm-based group find themselves uniting on this vastly surreal effort as it captures an alluring cinematic ambiance. Morabeza Tobacco becomes nestled in this trippy, lo-fi pop environment while coping with what is surely their most somber song to date. Despite the downcast and teary-eyed feel it can often present, “Ally McBeal” offers the sentiment that love, in all of its forms, is the unequivocal remedy to all of life’s most intricate questions.
Morabeza Tobacco says this of the new track, “The feel and the harmony were inspired by The Land Before Time, another one of those nostalgia trips. It’s probably the saddest song we’ve written so far. We have one song on the upcoming album that is another candidate in the competition of being the saddest song. Let’s hope that ‘Ally McBeal’ is gonna help some people open up their tear canals for a little cry that makes them feel better afterwards.”
