Memphis Industries remain one of the most important standard bearers for independent music in the UK. They’ve been responsible for unearthing some of the most excitingly odd pop of recent years, from Field Music to Cymbals Eat Guitars – a pattern they might well continue with Brooklyn quintet Milagres.
‘Glowing Mouth’, the band’s debut single, sounds, at moments, like an amalgam of all of the most interesting American university town bands to have materialised over the last few years. The guitars are Grizzly Bear, while the wavering, spidery falsetto is straight out of Bitte Orca.
But there is also something gloriously forward-thinking here; a wide-eyed, open-armed optimism that brings to mind some of North America’s most dramatic landscape – fittingly enough, it turns out, as the track was apparently inspired by a trip to British Columbia.
‘Glowing Mouth’ is out now on Memphis Industries. An album of the same name follows next year.
