Listen: Maria Minerva – “The Beginning”
Tallinn-born electronic pop creator Maria Minerva is set to release her latest album Histrionic, a release entirely recorded in her new US surroundings. The artist has unveiled the first single off the record, the hypnotic “The Beginning”.
Minerva deconstructs and reappropriates sounds and rhythms that belong to 90s dance music, rebranding them into a new breed of light-hearted electronic dance music. The floating atmosphere is entrancing and extremely pleasing to the ears, yet you cannot help but feel there is an eerie aura surrounding the old-school-sounding production. The track is fleshed out with electronic layers, but underneath the floating synths and 808 sounds, a thumping, conga-led heart emerges throughout. Minerva’s voice sounds dazed, and just like the droning synths, seems to levitate. She role-plays as an old-school dance vocalist, a mentor of sorts, warbling about having fun, forgetting about troubles, getting lost in the crowd and generally having a great night.
Histrionic will be released on 29 April via Not Not Fun Records.
