New year, new sound. LOYAL return with stomping anthem, “Moving As One”
It’s been some time since we’ve heard from LOYAL, who delivered some brilliantly danceable electronic pop back in early 2016. Back then, they released "Blue & The Green" and "House For You", both of which caused a stir on the blogosphere with borrowings from classic house. "Moving As One", however, marks an interesting departure as LOYAL experiment with a new genre-bending, anthemic sound.
The track has an unusually sparse and at times disjointed opening, with Woodkid-inspired tribal drums clashing with unexpected samples and sound effects. Indeed, it’s not until almost three minutes in that this uncharacteristic opening makes sense.
After the slow addition of some piano chords, which add a fleeting warmth, the track regains LOYAL’s signature four-to-the-floor, and quickly accelerates into a stomping second half. Those fleeting piano chords return as the foundations of a euphoric chorus, which is boosted by a huge brass band section. Finally layered together, the disparate elements of the opening section now come together to create a bedrock from which “Moving As One” rockets skywards.
“Moving As One” is a brilliant choice for LOYAL’s third release, showing their fans that they can write not just great contemporary house but weighty, longform records. Speaking about the track, LOYAL says "..."Moving As One" is about the fighting/the loving/the fucking, being in the moment, letting instincts dictate actions..."
If this is the shape of things to come, then we can’t wait to see where LOYAL’s instincts take them next.
