Listen: Sophie – Nothing More To Say / EEEHHH
School’s out for summer!!! Ok, that was a lie. But it feels like it. All those frigid winter days spent walking to school as the wind slaps you in the face turning your cheeks a crimson ‘just pinched’ color, as you reach your classroom merely minutes before the frostbite takes over your toes.
Endless days spent watching the snow melt to reveal the vibrant green buds that eventually bloom, signaling the end term papers, exams and waking up before noon. That feeling when the bell finally rings on the first day of summer, that’s what today feels like.
The elusive London-based producer, SOPHIE, who has popped up on LuckyMe, Mary Anne Hobbes and Jimmy Edgar mixes, nights at Fabric and Plastic People, and that funky Jackmaster remix floating around on Youtube, finally all of those pieces have come together today in the form of Sophie’s first proper release. Think Lunice meets Feel My Bicep. It’s a universal dance vibe that you can’t help but be addicted to, causing you to instantly want to know more and why you haven’t heard this before. Dare we say this is the beginning of a new genre; ‘Bubble and Squeak Bass’, if you’re cheeky, (which we are). Describing his own sound as “polished, glossy, and industrial,” we are swallowing every color of pill in sight to chase Sophie farther down this rabbit hole.
Just like the first day of your summer freedom, full of parties that seem to never end, holidays with friends and for once, the carefree feeling of getting caught up in the moment, that’s what Sophie is bringing to the party, and he plans on staying for a while.
It’s no wonder we’re obsessed, after this 12-inch release for Huntleys & Palmers, Sophie has an EP in the works for Actress’ Werk Discs label.
20/10/17: SOPHIE now uses she/her pronouns.
