Listen: Pawws – Time To Say Goodbye (ColeCo Remix)
It’s a little under two months since her first track ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ dropped but North Londoner Lucy Taylor’s opening act has played out quite perfectly.
Coming of the ASL-released single, the London debut of PAWWS saw Taylor’s USPs under the usual scrutiny when expectation and delivery comes under the spotlight. Her performance did what it should: confirm the talent and reveal a potential for something even greater.
Taylor cut her teeth as a keyboard player for Kele Okereke and MGMT got her to play flute at a few shows but her musical nexus is a different set of reference points, reaching back the moment when the naive pop sensibility of the early 80s began to mesh with something more underground. Think Dancetaria, circa 1984 but with a fine twist that plays in a more substantial musicality and aesthetic which deflects any sense of only looking backward.
‘Time To Say Goodbye’ is given a quality lift by Toronto production team ColeCo, leveraging Taylor’s vocal strengths by cascading them between synth swirls and a slow beat that breaks at just the right moments.
