Listen: Jean Deaux – “Find U”
Coming fourth in the BBC Sound of 2014 poll, Sampha is ready to hit the ground running this year, kicking things off by assisting the up and coming Chicago songstress, Jean Deaux, on “Find U”.
Originally an exclusive track on the Kitty Ca$h curated mixtape Love The Free, which also features the likes of Kelela and Sango, “Find U” gets the best out of both artists. With Sampha behind the boards and the mic for the second half, the bouncy piano and the drum and bass-lite beat compliment Jean Deaux’s beautifully frail and crackly vocals. Sampha’s rich soulful voice, which made him such a stand out on his work with SBTRKT and Jessie Ware, once again dominates here.
It does feel more like a Sampha track featuring Jean Deaux than the other way around, but it’s still a great introduction to someone who could quite easily have the same trajectory this year that Kelela did last.
