We’ve not been shy about our current obsession with Clare Maguire. Her impassioned comeback after 2011′s somewhat flawed debut album kick started back in May when we premiered ‘Changing Faces’ – a demo recorded during a songwriting stint in Nashville. ‘Paper Thin’ followed in July – a genuine contender for Song Of 2013, the production skills of Blue May adding a polished yet haunting sheen over Maguire’s tortured delivery.
Returning today with new single ‘Little White Lies’, a more direct pop approach is taken. The theme of harbouring love that fuels the aforementioned songs is still present, yet here the broodiness is replaced in favour of sassy knee jerking funk; eighties guitar strums reminiscent of Kick-era INXS are spliced with Maguire’s “give a fuck” vocal delivery.
If ‘Paper Thin’ was a song to soundtrack a morbid treck down the memory lane of a past love, ‘Little White Lies’ is the middle finger salute. And a glorious one at that.
Clare Maguire will perform her first live show in over two years at the Best Fit curated stage at the forthcoming Norwich Sound & Vision Festival on Saturday 12 October. Tickets are available now.
