Teen Danish band Liss set sail with modernised yacht rock on brilliant debut single, "Try"
Pop songs can irritate when catchy though uninspiring melodies take hold. They're a whole other beast when the hook and interplay offers something more peculiar. Of course, this depends on the listener but it's hard to imagine anyone could dislike Liss' startlingly good debut.
The Danish quartet strike that perfect balance between oddity and conformity on new single, "Try". Lead singer Søren Holm's squeaky vocal cuts through a barmy cluster of rubbery basslines, funk strums, glitchy samples and cow bells.
Its chorus lyric, "I try to be a man the man that you adore", is the song's most addictive quality, while the interplay between a jumping beat and smooth, meandering hooks brings to mind the fun and frivolity of '80s yacht rock.
It's a sterling effort from a young band with hopefully much on the horizon.
