Light Falls holds a mirror up to humanity with his new track “Dusk”
Identity can be a strange thing. The essence of a person can be profoundly changed by the events around them, and this is certainly the case for Light Falls.
Having forged some success for himself under the name Attaque, producer Dominic Gentry was inspired to change his moniker following the tragic global events of last year. He sought out something that transmits a more optimistic message and Light Falls seems like a good fit. It’s not just Gentry’s name that emits a more optimistic tone but this ethos has found its way into the very music he creates.
Compared to the dark techno sensibilities of his previous output, “Dusk” takes us on a brighter journey. The sinister undertones of resonating bass and soaring synth work are present and correct, but “Dusk” showcases a rhythmic energy that falls somewhere between vital and subdued. It’s an aesthetic that perfectly suits the track’s crepuscular title.
The slick vocals lend the track a warm, sub-sonic R&B feel that sits firmly in the realm of SOHN and serves as a nocturnal version of anything Rhye have produced.
"Dusk" delivers an expansive hit of spacious electronica but never slips into chart friendly territory. And that’s a good thing too, as Gentry’s sonic message, in some ways, transcends it.
