Korallreven have been bubbling away nicely for a couple of years, following the release of their debut single ‘Loved-Up’. That sunny, watery track, so aptly titled, helped form the backbone of the Balearic aesthetic that was so unavoidable this year and last.
Now, what seems like half a lifetime later, the Swedish duo are finally set to release their debut album – the equally aptly titled An Album By Korallreven.
I have to admit, news of a Girl Unit remix of lead single ‘As Young As Yesterday’ was slightly surprising. The jukey London producer, best known for his insanely overblown, insanely brilliant ‘Wut’, doesn’t seem like an immediately obvious fit. On closer inspection, though, it becomes clear what a brilliant choice it is. ‘As Young…’ already has the staccato, marching drum percussion and pitch-shifted vocal that characterises so much of Girl Unit’s work. The producer has taken those building blocks and rearranged them into a brooding, entirely new track that jettisons the wistfulness of the original in favour of drama and bass.
