Katie McBride is nothing short of mesmerising on delicate lo-fi wonder "The Skyline"
On new single "The Skyline", Toronto-based artist Katie McBride exhibits her extensive expertise with understated, yet glorious lo-fi drama.
"The Skyline" is a track that unfolds with a delicate intensity. Like origami, it is complex, beautiful and full of expertly crafted folds of intricacy that add to the final piece.
It opens with a seemingly simplistic set up, where McBride's soulful vocals are accompanied only by a keyboard that slowly begins to whirl around, taking on a hypnotic quality as they begin to grow. The mastery of the track comes in how McBride builds the layers in such a way that you barely realise that all of a sudden there are loads of different interweaving, magical sounds finding their space within the track.
When the song finally bursts into something of a climax, the synths rise whilst McBride's vocals soar and the interjecting trumpet motifs only heighten the feeling of exhilaration. It's dreamlike and fascinating, where the atmospheric soundscapes that McBride creates have the ability to truly capture your imagination and set your mind alight.
The song is ultimately a tiny peek into McBride's own mind, as she gives us glance at the thoughts that run through her head. She explains how the track is meant to reflect her life experiences, as she says "This song is a reflection on my life so far and in the space of what is to come. It’s my journey through memory, imagination, everyday living and finding beauty in it all. This was one of those lucky times a song came to me all at once."
