While Florida may be famous for its prickly heat and claustrophobic sweats, JMR, the somewhat forthright moniker of Joshua Michael Robinson, seems to take great pleasure in extinguishing the humidity with icy synths and a snaking groove.
While there’s nothing particularly innovative on display here, each aspect feels finely tuned and endlessly pored over, from the RnB croon to the slow burning payoff. Syrupy murmurs of bass ooze amongst crackles of crisp percussion as the track reaches its frothy crescendo, Robinson purring “I just want you closer” and, on the strength of this offering, you would assume that his request is almost always granted.
Of course, much of “Closer”‘s appeal lies in its serving as another tantalising glimpse of American Hell (pre-order here), the forthcoming album, and a record destined to melt your heart with its shimmering seduction.
